I pull up to the start of the Sage Burner 50k in the middle of frosted sagebrush steppe and bizarre rock formations at 8,000 feet altitude. I’m agonizing over my frigid warm-up when I see Malachi Ricks, a teenager who waves a huge smile and directs our truck into the parking lot at the start.
