I’ve joined the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival to share outdoor writing workshops in July, 2023! Below are summaries and registration for the two half-day workshops:
How To Bring the Scene Alive: Outdoor Creative Writing
With mule’s ears and elephant’s head as a piece of inspiration, writers will practice sensory engagement with their writing to hook readers and bring them into the scene. Led by national award-winning travel writer and Crested Butte local Morgan Tilton, we will hike through wildflower meadows to a jaw-dropping Gothic Valley overlook, where we’ll share a 60-minute creative writing workshop. We will walk through writing and editing exercises that help us capture place and provide writers with tools that they can use for future storytelling, to document experiences and future trips. Class size is limited to six participants to maximize interaction with the instructor. Expect to hike approximately three miles on moderately difficult terrain. High clearance, 4WD vehicle recommended. We will carpool, so only 1-2 vehicles at most are needed.
Sunday, July 7th, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. — $95

Historic Travel Writing: How to Integrate Place into Creative Storytelling
With mule’s ears and elephant’s head as a piece of inspiration, writers will practice sensory engagement with their writing, and connecting past with present, to hook readers and bring them into the scene while diving into the layers of place. Led by national award-winning travel writer and Crested Butte local Morgan Tilton, we will hike through wildflower meadows to a jaw-dropping Gothic Valley overlook, where we’ll share a 60-minute creative writing workshop. We will walk through writing exercises that help us capture the historic and present character of Crested Butte from the wildflowers to settlements and provide writers with tools that they can use for future storytelling to document experiences and future trips. Class size is limited to six participants to maximize interaction with the instructor. Expect to hike approximately three miles on moderately difficult terrain. High clearance, 4WD vehicle recommended. We will carpool, so only 1-2 vehicles at most are needed.
