As the expedition co-leader for the SUP first-descent of the 100-mile Escalante River, I paddled on camera for trip leader Dylan Brown, a stellar adventure photographer and videographer. His documentary short, “OUT HERE,” is more than stand-up paddleboarding–it’s about adventure as a whole. It’s about why we choose the outdoors over the indoors, and why we choose to risk more than we should to feel alive. “It’s no coincidence that we are drawn back to these places, these surreal landscapes that ask us the hard questions. You look up to the carved walls and realize that you’ve made the choice to feel small, to know that you’re just one part of this vast wilderness— ” This film was shot entirely on the SUP first descent of Utah’s Escalante River in June 2016.
